We are delighted that University of Glasgow has installed one of our reverse vending machines on their campus.

As champions of the reverse vending movement for some time now, we’re ecstatic to see it gaining traction here in the UK in supermarkets such as Iceland and Morrisons plus other retailers south of the border.

The Glasgow Uni reverse vending machine is located in the Fraser Building and will make a donation to the Beatson Pebble Appeal for every plastic bottle returned.

Scott Girvan, Executive Chef/Retail Manager of the University’s Hospitality Services, Estates and Commercial Services, said:

“This is part of our drive to increase sustainability and reduce waste across the University. The resulting clean and properly sorted recycling will be a valuable resource, so the machine will effectively pay for itself.”

Earlier this year, the Scottish Government made a commitment to develop a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for drinks containers that will be rolled out across Scotland, and Zero Waste Scotland are currently devising the scheme.

Reverse vending has operated in Sweden since 1984 where 90% of household waste is recycled. In Scotland that figure is 44%.
